Where should adult changing facilities be located in an airport?

It’s a question we often hear from airport planners, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Because regulations are still limited, placement decisions often rely on assumptions. Some believe these facilities should be tucked away for privacy, while others advocate for inclusive design that ensures passengers have equal access to amenities. Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to miss what truly matters, unless you’ve lived it.

According to Joint Projects, an accessibility consultancy based in the Netherlands that builds its expertise on the lived experiences of individuals with diverse disabilities, the following are essential aspects to consider when choosing where adult changing facilities should be located.

      • Add clear signage and directions. Include visible signs inside your building and road signs guiding visitors to the facility.
      • Share detailed information online. On your website, describe the room clearly - for example, note that it includes an adult-size, height-adjustable shower/change table, a peninsula toilet with access from both sides, a ceiling hoist, and other key features.
      • Include interior photos. Pictures build confidence and help visitors plan their trip.
      • Explain access. If a key or special code is needed, let people know exactly how to get it.
      • Promote awareness in your communication. Mention your adult changing facilities in newsletters, social media posts, and other public materials. This not only helps more people discover them - it also enhances your organization’s image as one that truly cares about accessibility and inclusion.

After a flight, travelers often head straight to the restrooms. That’s why Adult Changing Facilities must be clearly marked, visible, and easily accessible, ideally located along the natural passenger flow in the landside and airside areas. Facilities hidden from the general journey leads to reduced usability. Avoiding stairs or long detours is key.

Place facilities near high-traffic, multifunctional spaces: terminals, lounges, information desks, and intermodal connections (e.g., train or bus stations within the airport). If indoor space is limited, modular or prefab solutions can offer a fast and flexible alternative.

These restrooms should be located in well-lit, monitored areas, ideally within reach of airport staff. Emergency assistance systems should be integrated to ensure safe use at all times.

Access should be granted to those who need it, either through keypads, mobile app registration, or staff assistance, to ensure privacy, security and availability.

Placement should be guided by accessibility experts and informed by real life experience of users. Involving the disability community early ensures the facility truly meets real-world needs.
